I breed and raise pigs for meat. Mine are happy animals and always free-range. I love them to bits but it pains me to take them to the abattoir. I am however, a meat eater.
But despite this, even 'British' isn't always best. Look at this website http://www.roadhogs.com/vacancies.htm

How can this still continue in the UK? Never eating solids, never seeing straw or daylight.
    It really is deplorable.

If people knew what conditions the pigs lived in, they might change their mind and buy free range.

I have never bought meat of any kind before, as I don't eat it myself, but if I were to buy some for someone else then free range would be a must. Clear labeling would make a difference for the best.

The reason I would go for British is because I live in Britain. I don't know what British conditions are like compared to other countries (the only farms I've visited are ones in this country) but my reason for this decision is because I try not to buy imported food wherever possible. Not to do with animals directly, but the environment. Buying groceries from other countries means paying for shipments to be sent to the country = pollution and using up natural resources.

Mags53...the British pig farming is just as cruel (horrific) as pigs in other countries!!! Try going to a pig farm to see for yourself. They wont let you in because of the horrific conditions.

I think its outrageous that important details are missed out on pakaging. I feel exacly the same about eggs in food that don't even tell you if it has come from a free range happpy hen. This is totally misleading and someone needs to sort out the food industry.

It would probably upset the buyers and push some away, but most people who love pork, will quickly throw it in the shopping trolly. Perhaps images of pigs in terrible conditions on the packet will help. But you can never stop all of them!

The only way to truly prevent cruelty to animals is to stop eating them!! Today I heard my sister complain about her neighbour leaving her dog out in the street in the rain. As she was tucking in to her lamb chop. It's digusting how divorced people are from their feelings toward 'pet' animals and their food. Meat is the result of someone taking a living thing and slicing it's throat open so it bleeds to death, and if people are going to eat meat they need to realise this. MEAT SUCKS!!

OMG! I was naieve enough (in my 50's) to believe what the farmers say in that they look after their animals the best they can and treat them humanely .... after reading the RSPCA write-up, I went further are searched the net for pig castration and read up on this myself - HORRIFIC! This led to instructions on how to cut their teeth out - i'm absolutely stunned! I can see there is maybe a need to do these things but how they are done - absolutely barbaric! These PAINFUL procedures are not quick and they are done with someone holding the scared animal while someone else is 'operating' on them WITHOUT ANY PAIN RELIEF - FULLY AWAKE! No anaesthetic, local or general. The pigs must be in terrible pain, not only during the 'operations' but also for some time after. Can you imagine having your testicles squeezed out of a sliced hole, twisted and then the attaching thread scraped at continuously to break them off to inhibit bleeding (on each testicle) then being left to heal? This is apparently because a matured pig gives it's meat an odd smell and is also more agressive.... And your teeth being cut with something resembling nail clippers, the teeth being cut off close to the gum again with no pain relief or aftercare? They say this is to stop the piglets biting the sow's teats in a frenzy to feed where the sow would run off and not feed....What happens in the wild - definitely not any of this! I now want to search other animal procedure sites - but what i've read so far has made me feel so awful ... I suppose the farmers believe they are doing the best in the circumstances and with cost effectiveness etc, maybe they are - but they also have to think about pain and dare I say it, would they do this procedure to their child? Now don't some of you start saying there is a big difference between a child and an animal - when it comes to pain there is no difference! Other than you can explain to a child what you are going to do and how long it will take whereas the animal hasn't a clue what is being done nor why - i'm stunned, totally stunned! It's really made me look so differently at eating meat and dairy. There are 7 in our family, 1 being a vegetarian. I think there may be at least another 3 of us coming off the meat after this!
